How is the cost of my job determined?

All of our services are calculated by material and labor cost based on the size of the job. The "basic job" being what is necessary to create an acceptable appearance for you the customer. You will be given a number of options and a wealth of information enabling you to make informed decisions as to what best suits your needs and budget. Geography also will play a minor role in determining your final cost (the distance and time involved to get to your job may add a small amount to the cost) since we must pay for maintenance and fuel charges for our fleet.

Where can I find answers to technical questions on products and services?

As you know, the internet is a great tool for retrieving information and increasing our knowledge. We have provided a number of links on our site to other sites containing valuable information and articles pertaining to questions our customers have asked in the past. As we discover new information relevant to our field, we will add new links. As always, we provide information over the phone during business hours and when our estimator comes out to assess the job.

Why does my floor have gaps ?

Wood is a product of nature and subject to certain limitations, it also exhibits certain characteristics that affect a floors appearance (for data on specie hardness and moisture characteristicsIt is natural for a floor to have gaps up to a thirty-second of an inch or the thickness of a dime. The gaps may appear larger or smaller depending on the relative humidity of the house, usually during the heating season the gaps appear larger since heating systems tend to lower the humidity in the house. Sometimes the poly-urethane finish bonds several boards together causing "panelization" resulting in wider gaps at irregular intervals across the floor, as opposed to a more uniform and less dramatic pattern of gaps throughout the floor. Filler is not the answer to gaps since it can result in the filler popping or floor buckling or cracks becoming evident, thus altering the floors appearance negatively.

What can be done about stains ?

Some stains will be removed in the sanding process but others permeate the wood to a greater depth and do not sand out. If the technician feels the stain will detract from the appearance of your floor he will call it to your attention. You must decide if the board or area needs to have new wood installed or if the stained area appears acceptable or is in a place unlikely to be noticed.

What is the typical timing for a job ?

Generally a 400 square foot job will be sanded and a first coat of poly-urethane will be applied on the first day, larger areas may require more time to sand. The first coat of polyurethane will be allowed to dry overnight and then the floor will be abraded and a second coat applied. Stain is a separate application requiring a dry time of two hours to three days depending upon the desired result. Fast drying finishes are available if time constraints are a problem however they usually add to the cost of the job. In the case of installations job completion dates can be estimated. It should be noted that there can be many unforeseen incidents that can delay completion of refinishing or installation jobs in the estimated time frame and no guaranteed completion date is ever given.
